Shawnigan Lake School hockey teams compete in the Canadian Sport Schools Hockey League. The CSSHL was created in 2009 and includes teams from Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan and Idaho. It has grown from 5 sport schools to 18 across 7 divisions: Midget Prep, Midget Varsity, Elite 15s, Bantam Prep, Bantam Varsity, Female Prep and Female Varsity.
The CSSHL was specifically designed to enable like-minded players to increase their level of competition and exposure. The league’s mandate is to provide student athletes with a high-level hockey experience that compliments their academic commitments. Each team plays 25-35 league games and participates in playoffs which are scheduled to minimize school conflicts.
Despite its relatively short existence the CSSHL has had more than 200 alumni move on to Junior ‘A’ and above including 7 players selected in the NHL entry draft. Others have earned NCAA scholarships, won the Memorial Cup and represented their countries on the international stage.
At Shawnigan we try to have all of our competitive teams travel to Eastern Canada or the U.S. to compete against other elite private schools, Tier 1 and ‘AAA’ teams. This provides our students with an enhanced hockey experience and greater exposure to NCAA programs. Over the past 3 seasons our Midget Prep team has travelled to Finland, Boston and Toronto. Our Midget Varsity, Female Varsity and Bantam Prep teams have competed in tournaments in Minnesota, Michigan, New York and California in addition to many in Western Canada.
In our programs first 3 years SLS Hockey has had over 20 AP affiliates with BCHL teams, 3 players drafted into the WHL and one NCAA college commitment.
